Can you have lap band surgery after gastric bypass?

Back to Blog

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Bariatric surgery is one of the best ways for obese patients to lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time. The average gastric bypass patient is expected to lose on average 50% of their excess weight in their first year after surgery. Sometimes, gastric bypass patients do not lose all the weight they wanted to. There are a variety of reasons for this and every patient is different. However, there is a surgical solution that could help gastric bypass patients lose additional weight without getting a full gastric bypass revision.

Can You Get Lap-Band After Gastric Bypass To Help Lose Weight?

Yes, you can get a Lap-Band or any other adjustable gastric band after your gastric bypass. This procedure is known as band over bypass. It’s not a very common procedure but it’s a pretty simple one for a surgeon to do. The reason why someone might want to get a lap-band after gastric bypass is because they didn’t lose enough weight when they got their original gastric bypass. The typical band over bypass patient got their gastric bypass more than one year before considering additional surgery. It’s usually for people who found that their weight loss plateaued or if they started gaining weight after surgery.

How Does Band Over Bypass Work?

Band over bypass is a laparoscopic procedure just like the Lap-Band procedure. The surgeon cuts a series of very small incisions into the abdomen and then places the adjustable gastric band around the stomach pouch that was created in the original gastric bypass surgery. The band is then filled with a saline solution to constrict the stomach pouch. The result is that the stomach pouch can now hold much less food than it did originally. It’s a purely restrictive procedure and the goal is to prevent a patient from continuing to overeat and gain weight.

Recommendations for Band over Bypass Patients

  • Sip water throughout the day.
  • Avoid finger foods, and only snack on vegetables such as carrots or celery (and without dressing).
  • Avoid eating out, or consuming fast food.
  • Add an exercise routine.
  • Consider a vegetarian diet.
