Weight loss surgery is an inpatient procedure and you’ll be in the hospital for a couple of days. You will need at least 2 weeks away from work to recover. During recovery, you will not be able to eat the same foods you were eating before: you’ll have to stick to a post-op diet.

The weight you lose will depend highly on your adherence to the post-op diet and how heavy you were to start with. It’s not unusual to see up to 85% of exceed body weight lost: for example, if a patient was 100 pounds overweight, they may lose up to 85 pounds as a result of the surgery.

After your surgery, you will be on a postoperative diet that will last 10 weeks. This diet consists of different types of consistencies such as liquid, purees, soft foods, and finally a Normal Bariatric Diet. It is important to emphasize that each patient is different, so you will have the accompaniment of a certified nutritionist who will be guiding you on which foods are ideal for you, within your bariatric process.

Patients are restricted from lifting, pushing, or pulling objects over 25 pounds for the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. Sexual activity is restricted for the first 2-4 weeks after surgery. Patients should not take a bath (showers are okay beginning the day after surgery) or go into a swimming pool for two weeks.

Gastric sleeve surgery typically requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days. Post-surgery, most people can return to work after 1-2 weeks, depending on the nature of their job.

Pain is still bearable for most people. Patients often experience the most pain between days 2 and day 3.
