What is the Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery?

The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) bariatric surgery also known as the omega loop weight loss surgery or the one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is a malabsorptive and restrictive procedure. It’s a popular procedure and suitable for patients who may have regained weight after having other weight-loss procedures.

The surgeons on Dr. Illan’s team are regarded as leaders in Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass surgery. Thousands of Mini Gastric Bypass surgeries have been performed to date in Mexico with minimal complications and no fatalities.

You will not find a more experienced Mini Gastric Bypass surgical team – anywhere!

How does the Mini Gastric Bypass work?

1

The surgery starts by reshaping your stomach into the shape of a tube rather than the traditional J-shape with a huge pouch. The tube shape aids in food restriction and is roughly the size of your esophagus.

2

The surgeon next constructs the biliopancreatic limb by creating a short loop from the intestine as part of the bypass section of the treatment followed by stapling the big piece of the stomach pouch and the bypassed portion of the small intestine shut.

3

The MGB reduces food intake by shrinking your stomach pouch. It also lowers the amount of nutrients absorbed because food does not reach the top part of the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption occurs. Because of the curvature of the part of the small intestine bypassed, the surgery is also known as an omega loop. It resembles the Greek letter “omega.”

Benefits of the
Mini Gastric Bypass

If you’re looking for a Mini Gastric Bypass procedure, and you’re in Mexico or looking to travel to Mexico to get the procedure done at a lower cost, Dr. Jalil Illan and Dr. Rutledge can help you. Dr. Jalil Illan has performed the mini gastric bypass on hundreds of patients, and Dr. Rutledge has spent more than 30 years perfecting his technique.

  • Procedures typically only last between 30-60 minutes
  • The procedure can be tailored to each patient. In order to achieve rapid weight loss in more obese patients, the surgeon may make the bypass limb longer. Similarly, the limb can be shortened to allow for slower weight reduction in patients who are of a lower weight.
  • There’s a lower risk of side effects than the usual gastric bypass
  • Has better long-term weight loss results than a gastric sleeve
  • Remission of type 2 diabetes is possible.
  • Patients are at a reduced risk of getting GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) compared to patients who have a sleeve gastrectomy.

Expected Weight Loss with the MGB

How much weight can I lose with a Mini Gastric Bypass?

Typically, as with the standard gastric bypass procedure we expect mini gastric bypass patients to lose 60-70% of their excess weight over a 2-year period, and most of this weight is lost in the first year after surgery.

FAQs on Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery in Mexico

Mini gastric bypass cost will vary depending on the provider. Getting a mini gastric bypass in Mexico is much cheaper than getting it done in the US. Our packages start at $4,600, however mini gastric bypass may cost more if you specifically are looking for that procedure.

Mini gastric bypass has similar results to the regular roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The expectation is for patients to lose around 50% of their excess weight in the first year. Excess weight is the difference between your goal weight and your current weight. A 400 pound patient whose goal weight is 150 pounds can expect to lose somewhere around 125 pounds one year after surgery, however lower weight loss has been reported.

Mini gastric bypass is a relatively short procedure, taking only 1.5 hours to perform. However, it is still an inpatient procedure that requires that the patient undergo general anesthesia

The mini gastric bypass procedure is not only safe, but it has been shown to have a lower risk of complications than the traditional roux-en-Y gastric bypass. However, complications may occur. The most common complications involve minor problems such as ulcers and hernias, however there is a risk of more serious complications such as infection, staple line leaks, and pulmonary embolisms. These complications are very rare, and our doctors are prepared to deal with them should they arise.

During recovery, the patient will be put on a post-op diet. This diet does two things: first, the reduced amount of calories kickstarts weight loss at a rapid rate; second, the diet allows for the digestive system to recover and reduce risk of complications such as dumping syndrome and severe abdominal pain. The diet happens in stages, starting with a clear liquid fast, then proceeding to allow liquified foods, then soft solid foods, and finally, healthier solid foods can start to be reintroduced.
