How to Manage Your Cravings After Weight Loss Surgery

Back to Blog

As you gear up for weight loss surgery in Mexico, you need to be thinking about how you will navigate your post-procedure landscape. While it is fun to window shop for your future wardrobe and plan the vacations you never dared to go on before, there are other aspects you need to think about as well. Specifically, how to manage cravings after surgery.

Depending on the type of surgery you get, you might have reduced production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. This means even when your stomach is empty, you are less likely to feel hungry. The problem? Cravings often aren’t connected to a sense of hunger or need for nutrients. Instead, they are psychological.

While bariatric surgery can do a lot, it is up to you to repair your relationship with food. So, how can you manage your post-weight loss cravings?

Don’t Skip Meals

It is common for people to skip meals after getting weight loss surgery in Mexico. This is because they believe that it will help them consume fewer calories over the course of the day and further enhance their weight loss. The problem is that this creates a sensation of hunger and encourages you to think about food. It is easy to move from planning a healthy meal in your head to thinking about all the treats you’d love to have.

Engage in Meal Planning

One of the best ways to keep yourself on track is to prepare all your meals and snacks in advance. This helps prevent you from giving in to a craving just because it is convenient since all your meals are already prepped and ready to go. Additionally, since you already have food ready, you are less likely to skip meals.

Get Your Water In

After surgery, you need to drink at least 64 ounces of fluid every day. This is important for your overall health and healing. However, it can also reduce the likelihood of cravings. When we are dehydrated, our body sends signals to get fluids through whatever means necessary, and since many foods include plenty of water, this often manifests as cravings.

Stop Socializing Around Food

One method for stopping cravings is to end the practice of centering socialization around food. Unfortunately, many social situations are food centric—and not the healthy kinds. Embrace other options for socializing, such as outdoor activities and even coffee dates where you can easily choose a healthier option.
