Qualifying for Bariatric Surgery: Requirements and How to Know If You Are Eligible

Back to Blog

Bariatric surgery procedures are weight loss surgeries that can help you lose weight and live healthier. Unfortunately, not everyone who wants to qualify for bariatric surgery actually qualifies. The requirements for weight loss surgery are strict and there are many reasons someone might not be eligible for the procedure. This guide will explore how to qualify for bariatric surgery.

You Need to Have the Right BMI

The first step to qualifying for bariatric surgery is having an appropriate Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI Scale measures your weight in relation to how tall you are. To qualify for weight loss surgery, the requirements state that anyone with a BMI of 40 or higher should be considered eligible; if your score falls between 35 and 39.99 then you might qualify if you have a comorbidity, like diabetes or heart disease.

If your BMI is below 35 but higher than 30, you might still qualify, depending on the circumstances. For example, if you have an illness related to your weight that is having a significant negative impact on your life, you could be eligible for surgery.

You Need to Have Made Sincere Efforts to Lose Weight

Part of how to qualify for weight loss surgery is to have done some work first. Bariatric surgery is not a “quick fix” for weight loss issues. To qualify, you need to have tried and failed at other methods of losing weight before considering bariatric surgery. For example, if you are over the age of 35 then it’s likely that dieting has been an integral part of your life since you were in high school. You need to prove that you have put in a significant amount of effort and time into dieting, only to see minimal results.

You Need Supportive Providers

Even if your BMI is 40 or higher, you might not qualify for bariatric surgery if the people who are supporting you do not believe it’s right for you. Your provider, your friends and family, even your employer all need to believe that bariatric surgery is the best path for you. All of these people will play a role in helping you determine if this procedure is right for you!

How to Know if You Qualify

If you are still unsure if bariatric surgery is right for you, make an appointment with your provider. They can help you explore all of the options available to lose weight and determine what’s best given your age, BMI score, comorbidities (if any), and support system.
